One of the most beloved illustrators of the twentieth century, Norman Rockwell depicted countless scenes and moments of life that captured the essence of the American experience. From Rockwell's early career as an illustrator for Boy's Life to his later work as the cover artist for The Saturday Evening Post and finally for Look magazine, Norman Rockwell's Chronicles of America tells the story of this great artist's life by sampling his work from 1912 to the late 1970s.

Chapter one, covering the period from 1894 to 1929, tells the story of how Rockwell got started in the illustration business, graduating from art school and opening his studio shortly thereafter. When the Roaring Twenties came to a halt in 1929, Rockwell had already established himself as a major illustrator and married and divorced his first wife. Chapter two, spanning the years 1930 to 1945, tells how Rockwell found a second wife and moved into a new studio in Arlington, Vermont. As World War II came to a head, Rockwell joined the war effort with one of his most famous series of illustrations, the Four Freedoms. Chapter three encompasses the boom years, 1945 to 1959, a period that saw Rockwell's fame as an illustrator spread and the Rockwell family move to Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

There, in 1959, Rockwell's second wife died; they had been together for twenty-nine years. Chapter four, covering the period from 1960 to 1978, shows how Rockwell's art and outlook evolved with the times as they were a-changin'. His art became more political as Rockwell began reflecting on such issues as the fight for civil rights and the increasing prominence in American life of international relations.

Rockwell married his third wife, Molly, and they began to travel widely as his work took him around the world. When Rockwell died in 1978, he had recently witnessed and illustrated mankind's first tentative steps on the moon's surface.

Written by journalist Margaret Rockwell (the painter's niece) with assistance from Thomas Rockwell (the artist's son) and produced in conjunction with the Norman Rockwell Museum, this heartwarming volume shows how Norman Rockwell's art evolved over his career. With more than 125 full-color and black-and-white illustrations, Norman Rockwell's Chronicles of America is a stunning tribute to this great artist's vision of twentieth-century America.
