Over 400 illustrations, including 176 in full colour, and several thousand specifications of aircraft types and variants combine to make Combat Aireraft of World War Two the most important aviation reference work to have been published for years. The result of long and intensive research, this represents the first serious attempt to gather together, within one volume, concise yet comprehensive details of every aircraft actively engaged in operations during the Second World War. Accurate* data lists provide the basic technical details of each aircraft, including a brief résumé of its wartime career. The 176 colour plates will be especially valuable to the knowledgeable aviation buft, for, many of the colour schemes reproduced depict unusual or particularly interesting patterns: indeed, many of the aircraft are shown in finishes not previously illustrated in colour. These plates are supplemented by more than/ two hundred line drawing. showing the main protagonists in the war in the air.

Compiled from official sources and private archives, Combat Aircraft of World War Two encompasses even more than its title suggests: for, in addition to fighter and bomber aircraft, it includes the many transport, reconnaissance, liaison and other ancillary types (including civil impressments) that played such an integral - but relatively little-recorded ~ part in waging global war. The book is arranged by country of manufacture: Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Rumania, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, USSR, Yugoslavia. Within each country, the information is organized by manufacturer and model. For each aircraft, there is a data list presenting details of: power plant; performance (including maximum speed, climb and ceiling); weights and dimensions; armament and crew; the air forces with which each particular aeroplane served; variants (including modifications, rearmaments, licenced building, etc.); production figures; and a general remarks section, listing briefly the design and service career of each model. Also included are carefully-selected Orders of Battle, enabling the reader to compare the strengths of opposing air forces at specific times during the course of the war, plus à Glossary, which includes comparative unit organizations for the major air powers. A select bibliography provides a useful guide to further reading on specific tópics. All the information in the book has been meticulously checked and authenticated by a team of aviation experts under the direction of J. M. Bruce, Keeper of Aircraft and Aviation Records at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon. Fully indexed, to provide rapid access to the very essence of Second World War aviation, Combat Aircraft of World War Two is a basic single-volume reference work without equal - the optimum compilation of hard fact - essential materia for all concerned with aviation history.
