The aim of this book is to tell about men, ideas, and movements in Italian art during the first half of the twentieth century. The programs and experiments that have had the power to bring together the efforts of many different artists during the past fifty years, are the live, actively debated, and immediaterealities which demand a consideration at least equal to their intellectual sincerily.

But what has been needed is a book offering an adequate, straighforward framework of judgment, and a link between the public and the work of art. For thease reasons we have thought it opportune to publish the present book, whose exhaustive documentation will be a measure of the difficulties of the undertaking. - Giampiero Giani-
