The colours and markings worn by Luftwaffe aircraft have long provided a rich source for exploration by historian and modeller alike.
The reason for the universal fascination that this subject holds is as difficult to define as it is to untangle the web of truths and half truths which attend it.
The contents of this book are the result of more than a decade of attempting to isolate fact from supposition, the mileage covered, both mental and physical, being a direct measure of the complexities involved.
The basis of the book, like any historical work, is founded on a proportion of primary documents, all that are known to have survived. Undoubtedly others still remain to be rediscovered but many have been lost for all time. It is perhaps this element of incompleteness, this lack of total indisputable definition that is the key to the subject's fascination.
