When Vespasian and his son,Titus, had subdued the Jews and crushed the Revolt, the emperor who had sent them on that mission,Nero, had been killed and Civil War had brought Vespasian to the throne. In his stead, he sent a new governor, Flavius Silva , to Judea to besiege and take the final stronghold of the Zealots;King Herod's fortress / palace along the Dead Sea. Masada was a FORMIDABLE fortress in the desert and the logistics of supplying Roman troops in such a wasteland was trying enough. The new governor took up the task and completed his mission in May of 73 C.E.But his triumph was taken away when he entered the fortress of Masada and found all the Zealots and their families dead by their own hands.
Thus was it recalled by Josephus in his book on the JEWISH WAR.and a legend was born of Jewish resistance unto death that persists to this day.
HERE are Early archaeological reports of the excavations at Masada by archaeologists M.Avi-Yonah ,N.Avigad,Y.Aharoni,I.Dunayevsky & S.Gutman .
