The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, March 9 - July 18, 1999.
This spring and summer, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has been holding an exhibition displaying a wide array of medieval artifacts, some not previously shown. This catalog to that exhibit reveals greater depth while still offering fine representations of the amazing breadth of items collected by the Met.
The catalog is arranged chronologically by period, from the fourth to the 16th century. Each entry is accompanied by at least one picture, the majority, unfortunately, in black and white, with text of varying lengths. The contributors, all noted art scholars and curators, examine not only the physical particulars of the item and its art historical context but also its acquisition history, as of the relief sculpture from the fourth century that spent recent years as a lawn ornament. Wixom, who just retired as Michel David-Weill Chairman of the Department of Medieval Arts and the Cloisters, has done a fine job with this well-constructed catalog. His contributed texts are particularly detailed and engrossing.
