Preface by Marcel Aubert.
Photographs by Jean Roubier.
Translated from the German by Marie Heynemann.
This book is the result of the closest cooperation between a well-known Swiss art historian, an expert on medieval French art and architecture, and a Parisian photographer of genius.
As Marcel Aubert, member of the Institut de France and a great authority on Romanesque art in France, says in his preface, the text by Joseph Gantner and Marcel Pobé brings out all the grandeur and the variety of these historic monuments, whilst to go through Jean Roubier's photographs "is like taking a real journey through the whole of Romanesque France". Professor Gantner, in his illuminating essay, has gathered together present day knowledge of the architecture, sculpture and painting of the Romanesque period. Dr. Pobé fills in the historical background to the revival of culture-and its manifestations in architecture, sculpture and wall painting-during and after the first millenium.
Cathedrals, churches, abbeys; sculptures, wood carvings and murals-general views, individual features and details-all these Jean Roubier presents to us in their most compel. ling aspects in no fewer than 271 specially taken and finely reproduced photographs; at the same time, Marcel Pobé places them in historical perspective and assesses their aesthetic qualities, in his instructive notes to the plates.
