This lavishly illustrated book will be a great boon to all hunters, soldiers and sportsmen fascinated by guns that pack a powerful punch. Rob Adam provides a comprehensive overview of the chief developments - in muzzle energy, bullet weight and stopping power -involving potent rifles and handguns around the world.
The quest for power and how it was achieved through new ignition systems and modern propellants is examined, along with explanations of what actually makes a powerful weapon. The rise of the revolver is charted, from Colt's design for Texas Ranger Colonel Samuel Walker in 1849 to the modern .454 Casull and .500 Linebaugh wheelguns. Rob Adam also outlines the developments of the self-loading pistol, from the introduction of smokeless propellants right up to the latest gas-operated big-bore pistols, such as the .475 Widely Magnum.
Even more potent are the single-shot pistols used for handgun hunting, many of which are chambered for rifle cartridges. The limitations of lever-action rifles are explained along with the mechanical superiority of bolt-action rifles based on the Mauser '98 action. The author reviews the big-game hunter's double rifle and the extensive range of cartridges they can use, including the new .700 Holland & Holland Nitro Express round.
The final chapter examines powerful military ammunition for infantry use. For long-range shooting, various.30 calibre rounds were retained and enhanced by a mixture of sporting magnum cartridges and specially designed sniping rounds, with an effective range of more than half a mile.
