Isfahan is one of ten cities which have been designated by UNESCO as universal heritage. Venice is unique; Paris is known as the bride of the world's cities; Amsterdam is beautiful and unique. And so is Isfahan. Whenever I have travelled to Isfahan, I have gone for the sake of its spectacular sights; I have gone to be filled with wonder and admiration; I have not gone to inspect mundane architecture and slums. To do just these, I would'nt have had to leave the city where I live. Poverty and lack of identity may be observed everywhere.
As with my previous work, I am indebted to many people for their help and assistance in the preparation of this book. I am indebted to my old friend Shahriär Izadi who undertook a variety of jobs - helping me with the selection of photographs, drawing maps and designing the cover etc. - and to Mr. Mohammad Yusef Nili, Shahriar's colleague and our mutual friend. And if it were not for the helpfulness of a number of friends and individuals including the following: Dr. Ashuri, Engineers Purshiravi, Vafi and Montazer (of the Isfahan campus' of the University of the Arts), Messers Hoseinäbädi and Ne'matollahi, Mrs, Jacqueline Haghshenas, and Messers Karim Emâmi, Abbäs Mokhber, Hosein Hoseinkhani and Hasan Kia'ian, the various problems encountered would not have been solved as quickly or as efficiently.
