The volume present excellent examples of the draftmanship of all the major Dutch artists of the 19th century. In the first half of the century, draftsmen tended to concentrate on Dutch landscapes, cattle pieces, and scenes from contemporary life in drawings characterized by restraint as well as traditional style and choice of subject. Volume 1 includes works by Koekkoek, Schelfhout, Knip, and Scheffer, as well as an essay by Robert-Jan te Rijdt.During the second half of the 19th century leading Dutch artists took note of the latest movements abroad, particularly in France. The striking restults of this internationalization include a wide variety in style and technique, as well as choice of subject. Volume 2 includes works by Breitner, Israels, Jongkind, Van Gogh, and Toorop.
