The Greek Miracle celebrates the birth of humanism in Greece 25 centuries ago, which also produced an outburst of the creative spirit that has never been surpassed. This catalog features 34 original Greek works of marble and bronze sculpture, displaying the development of the Greek classical style. Though relatively few fifth-century originals survive today amid the wealth of ancient works of art from all of antiquity, chance has preserved, at least in part, architectural sculpture from four great temples of this period. An example from each was included in the exhibition, as well as freestanding sculpture, both large-scale marbles and small bronzes, dedicated as votive gifts in sanctuaries. A series of gravestones takes the story to the end of the fifth century. Essays examine classical art, politics, thought, architecture, and drama.
