With A Chapter on the Architeture of the Church by Slobodan Curcic The Church of St. Mary of the Admiral in palermo, commonly Known as La Martorana is the foundation of George of Antioch an Orthodox Greek from Syria That built the churc in the 1140s as a Thanks-offering to the virgin for the favors he had received from her. According to the example set by King Roger he had it adorned with Mosaics by artist from Byzantium.
In the present volume this famous decoration is for the first time published in his entirety. In Addition to a full and detailed coverage in black and White there is also an ample selection of reproduction in color.
The text explores in depth the iconographic and stylisticssources on which the Greek Mosaicists drew, the departures from Byzantine norm which resulted from local circumstances, and the position of the decoration vis-a-vis the contemporary work in the royal foundations.
