The quality floral city runs its history from the Middle Ages to the present day, manifesting itself in all fields of civil and religious life. In heraldry civic stands lily, red white field: it was named the forint, the strongest currency of medieval Europe. And to take us to the twentieth century, variously stylized lily is the symbol of the football team. The Florentine art is rich in floral paths, from Giotto forward, with poetic inventions in Beato Angelico, Benozzo Gozzoli, Della Robbia, Verrocchio: scarves and garlands of roses, triumphs of greenery, bouquets and single cut flowers, to blaze floral of Botticelli's Primavera. The vocation floral Florence is so deeply etched in the history of the city, which is not necessary to underline it further. Recovered in times of late Romanticism, it is expressed and is expressed in flowers, in the Festival of Arts and Flowers established in 1895, in the Rose Garden at the Ramparts, in the activity of public and private enthusiasts as the Garden Club or the Italian Society Iris (1959) who runs the Iris Garden at Piazzale Michelangelo. And today? Public and private gardens, nurseries, markets, kiosks, florists, artists of ornate floral decorations renew the city, from which artists today are inspired inexhaustible. (T-CA)
