The production of ceramics, terracotta, majolica and porcelain in Tuscany is the result of a tradition which can be traced back to classic antiquity and which in some cases continues to this day. As well as being an important sector economically, it has been the source of cultural values which have given it its distinctive features and made it recognizable both in Italy and abroad.<br/< "Terre di Toscana" is the name given to all those centres of production, which, however different their history, share this set of values which today, as well as in the past, has led to the creation of manufactured objects of great artistic value. These objects are the fruit of a marriage between hard work and a creative spirit. All this, added to the beauty of its natural environment, makes Tuscany a region which is known and appreciated the world over.
In order to promote and show to full advantage their territory from the point of view of culture, economics and tourism, an association named "Terre di Toscana" was created by a group of towns with a long-term tradition in ceramic production, in order to develop common strategies and projects. These have been joined by other production centres and there are others still about to become members too.
With the publication of this guide, the association aims to tell the story of ceramic production, both where it rose to the level of a fine art as well as the manufacture of ordinary household objects for everyday use. It also introduces the reader to the towns and territories which have played an important part in this story, and describes the beauty of their landscape and architectural heritage. Finally, to those interested in production today, it names present manufacturers in each town.
