An evocative journey through the great film career of Bernardo Bertolucci, from his firts film The Grim Reaper (1962) to the most recent The Dreamers (2003), through photographs taken on set and movie stills.
An introspective type of cinema, and at the same time highly spectacular, made of titles that gave gone down in the history of the seventh art, like The Conformist, Last Tango in Paris, 1900, and The Last Emperor, often starring big-name actors like Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Gérard Depardieu, Donald Sutherland, Peter O'Toole, Debra Winger, John Malkovich, and many other internationally famous figures.
The images viewed in succession can present a unity of intent and of elements which attempt to grasp the poetic essence of this cinema rich in multiple visual, literary and pictorial suggestion. Adding these "portions" together, we see a discourse taking shape, on time and how it is perceived, a foundational idea of Bertolucci's films. To render the meaning of a film without music, sometimes without color, without dialogue, without movement - this is the prime, and not easy task of a movie stills photographer.
Half-closing the eyes to imagine the passage between one scene and another, an istant of darkness between one photograph and another, to call up remembrances from our affective memory as viewers, but also to have confirmation that the director-author is an ideal figure recontructed precisely and solely by the viewer who knows how to recognize his ttyle, his signs, his obsessions.
