In this award-winning volume, a professional photographer and a professor of English literature-both long-time students and admirers of C. S. Lewis-have collaborated to offer a look behind this influential twentieth-century scholar, teacher, author, critic, poet, and apologist. Though it includes a chronology of his life, this is not a biography but a personal introduction, a composite portrait of a fascinating individual, set in the world in which he lived.
In photographs and text (much of it in Lewis's own words), Douglas Gilbert and Clyde S. Kilby show us the deer park outside Lewis's rooms at Magdalen College, Oxford; the Kilns, where he lived most of his life; the forests and mountains and seascapes that delighted him on the walking trips he was fond of-which later served as an inspiration for the settings in his Narnia
tales; the small parish church he attended and next to which he was buried; the friends and colleagues who helped shape his life.
We meet the young Lewis, too, the talented and brilliant child in Belfast, captivated by the myths and legends of the North, already writing and illustrating imaginative stories and poems. Drawing in part on previously unpublished correspondence, Professor Kilby traces Lewis's long and ultimately unsuccessful struggle to find joy apart from God, and goes on to show the mature Lewis, dedicated to proclaiming and defending the faith he once had denied.
