Schwarz gilt für Soulages als Spiegel und Sinnbild des Lichts. Die entscheidende Hinwendung zum Schwarz vollzieht Soulages in den 1950er–Jahren, indem er systematisch seinen Form– und Farbkanon immer stärker zum Schwarz hin fokussiert.
Die Werke entstehen in einem europäischen Kontext der Neufindung und Avantgarde, der gekennzeichnet ist von Einflüssen des amerikanischen Abstrakten Expressionismus, des Informel bis hin zur asiatischen Tuschemalerei. Der Blick in die 1950er–Jahre zeigt Soulages intensive Auseinandersetzung mit Geste und Farbe und kontextualisiert diese mit exemplarischen Referenzen zu Zeitgenossen und befreundeten Künstlern, u.a. Hans Hartung, Sam Francis und Zao Wou-Ki.

Soulages’ crucial turn to the black colour happened in the 1950s, as he focussed systematically his canon of forms and colours on black. His works originate in an European sphere of redefinition and avantgarde, which is marked by influences from the American abstract expressionism, the informel up to Asian ink paintings.
The approach in the 1950s reveals Soulages’ intense confrontation with gesture and colour in a context of paradigmatic references to contemporary artists and friends including Hans Hartung, Sam Francis and Zao Wou-Ki.
