The deftness and immediacy of line remain steadfast, whereas style, technique, and perspective deviate with abandon. Far from being the poor man's canvas, paper is undoubtedly the zenith of unrestrained expression, experimentation, and discovery. For this reason, the Guggenheim has embarked on an unprecedended collaboration with one of the foremost collections of graphic work in the world, the Graphische Sammlung Albertina in Vienna. For the first time in the Guggenheim's history, some of the finest drawings ever produced, by seventeen of the world's most renowned artists, occupy center stage in the museum's rotunda galleries. What makes the exhibition all the more exstraordinary is that their works span five centuries of history, milieux and artistic innovation. (T-CA)
